Through the comparison between the traditional Chinese pictorial map and the large scale measured map, this paper discusses how the ancient map shows the city and how to use the ancient map to study the historical geography of the city. The traditional pictorial ancient map shows the group relationship of cities in the region through the city hierarchy, providing us with a convenient space condition to explore the mountain and river geographical environment of cities at all levels, how to select the location of cities, how to configure and associate urban forms and systems with each other in combination with written materials. The measured map reflects the development process of the city, and shows the comparison between the built and unbuilt sections of the city. Here, take the cities along the modern land and water transportation or the open port cities as an example, combined with the measured map, to explain and understand the regional differentiation of the city’s internal functional structure. Because some local cities in China have the phenomenon of “double cities” separated by rivers and maintained by bridges, this paper points out that “double cities” are actually political administrative cities and commercial and handicraft towns by analyzing the city maps of traditional image drawing and modern measured city maps. Although they have different regional functions, they together form a city integration. |
